As part of the Budapest Spring Festival you can visit the “Hungarian Folk Dance Gathering” which is the much acclaimed National Folk Dance Festival and Fair held annually in Budapest. The name of the event is Magyar Tanchaztalalkozo. As this event is less advertised to tourists, the event is a non-touristy program, where you can meet lots of locals, and see the wide range of Hungarian folk dance styles, folk musics of various regions, and even buy some handcrafted gifts (at a considerably lower price than in Vaci utca shopping street)
Budapest Spring Festival: Folk Dance House and Fair at Budapest Sports Arena
At the Papp Laszlo Sports Arena in Budapest there will be a huge fair and dance house festival for those who love folk music, handmade crafts, etc. You can learn a few steps from the Hungarian folk dances too. The “National Folk Dance Gathering” is basically the Hungarian Folk Dance Festival, a very child friendly event, the arena is huge, lots of people are dancing, there is a play corner for kids, etc. This gathering will be over 30 years old, a Folk Dance House and Fair in Hungary attracting thousands, no wonder it has been promoted to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage.
Hungarian folk is a rich and well preserved folk art, kept alive via folk dance groups, folk dance houses, folk dance ensembles, Hungarian folk handcrafts (e.g. sold at the Budapest Christmas markets), and Hungarian folk fairs.
